Green Lantern Trailer Hits the Web!

Hello there! It’s been one month since our last update – my deepest apologies for that. It’s a short team, and we’ve all been busy with real life, unfortunately… but at least I’m back, and I bring you something cool.
The Green Lantern trailer hit the Internet minutes ago! You can see the trailer on iTunes right now, or on YouTube:

Now, for a lot of people, this might not be the most interesting or noteworthy news; I’m sure a lot would ask “What’s a ‘green lantern’?”, too. But anyone who knows their DC Comics from their Marvel knows what Green Lantern is, and they’ll probably be as excited as me for finally seeing this trailer.
To sum things up, Green Lantern starts off as the story of Hal Jordan, a cocky and self-assured US Air Force pilot who, by a twist of fate, ends up face-to-face with a dying alien who just crash-landed on Earth. The alien, Abin Sur, is a member of an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps, created centuries ago to patrol the 3600 sectors of the galaxy. Each member has a special green power ring that can conjure up a construct of anything one thinks of – say, if you want a chair, the ring can create a green-colored chair construct just the shape the Green Lantern thought of. Abin Sur’s ring chooses Hal as his successor, and he ends up becoming a superhero.

Now, I’m gonna admit something here: in the past two years, I’ve grown into a huge comic book nerd, and Green Lantern has become my favorite character (and the only thing besides Batman that I can read from DC, really). You see, an author by the name of Geoff Johns started work on the Green Lantern comics six years ago, and it’s become a fantastical title ever since. I’ve got a bunch of trade paperbacks and hardcovers from his run on the series, including the critically-acclaimed Blackest Night series he did last year, and I love it. It’s seriously some of the best stuff I’ve read in years.

The movie, starring Ryan Reynolds, is based on Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern: Secret Origin, a story arc that reintroduced Hal Jordan’s first steps as a Green Lantern – so, as most first superhero movies, it’s an origin story. I don’t particularly like Reynolds, but I love the character, so I was eagerly awaiting this.

Seriously, even if you have never heard of the character, give it a shot, or at least check out the trailer. I might not be the longest-running Green Lantern fan, but I’m really into it these days, and I gotta say it’s looking better than I first expected – but it’s also helmed by Casino Royale‘s director Martin Campbell, so he knows how to make a good origin story.

Here’s a few highlights from the trailer:

Here’s a good look at Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan in his Green Lantern costume (which, as you’ll learn by the trailer if you didn’t know already, is created by his ring). We’d already seen it on a maganize cover a while ago, but there’s nothing quite like examining it in motion.
I actually think it looks pretty cool, unlike most fans. The almost organic feel to it makes more sense than it being a latex costume like most superheroes. It’s supposed to be an otherwordly suit created by a power ring, right? That’s why this works!

I’ll admit that I totally geeked out when I saw this two-second scene. Sinestro!!
Sinestro was Hal Jordan’s mentor when he first joined the Green Lantern Corps, until the Guardians of Oa – little blue men (and later women, too) that lived since the dawn of life and created the Corps – learned that he had become the dictator of his home world, Korugar. After his protegé turns on him, Sinestro is banished from the Green Lantern Corps and into the antimatter universe, but his story doesn’t end here… hehe.

Usually, make-up and CGI don’t really affect me much, but this image gave me the creeps. That’s Hector Hammond, one of Hal Jordan’s first foes. Although his film origin is reportedly different, in the comics Hammond got psychic powers – and an inflated head – from a strange alien meteor, and eventually became one of Hal’s nemesis, envying his good looks and success.
He seems very happy for a guy whose head looks like an helium-filled balloon, if you ask me.

KILOWOG! This moment is one second long, but I just love it! The way Hal flinches, presumably due to Kilowog’s awful breath, is just hilarious. And the CGI characters, from the two glimpses we get, look really good, too.
Kilowog has a special space in Green Lantern fans’ hearts. He’s the drill instructor of the Corps – that is, he trains the newbies, whom he calls “poozers”, and turns them into bona fide space cops. I hope he really gets more than a cameo or a single scene, because he’s one of the best characters of the comics.

I could post some images of Oa (the Green Lantern Corps’ world), which looks stunning, but I figure you should watch the trailer yourself. I have high hopes for this, so I’ll keep you all posted!

In brightest day, in blackest night
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil’s might
Beware my power, GREEN LANTERN’S LIGHT!

Gonna be honest, but I thought the movie looked just awful. Looking forward to Thor way more than Green Lantern.
