Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Ideas for New Fighters

A great many fanboys’ dreams came true when Capcom announced Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds – also known as “MvC3: FTW“, probably the best acronym I’ve seen in a videogame name. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was, and still is, a popularity phenomenon, commonly played in championships around the World, so the announcement that a sequel was finally coming after ten years of speculation was received with a lot of excitement.
I have to admit, I never really did play the game beyond the PSN demo. Arcades were never that popular where I live, and I never had a Dreamcast, but I always wanted to try it. I love Marvel, and the idea of using Spider-Man, Iron Man, or any of the other Marvel icons in a fighting game was just cool – so now I’m eagerly antecipating MvC3.
Capcom has slowly but steadily been revealing the roster of characters of the game – currently, the Marvel roster is composed of Captain America (Steve Rogers), Deadpool, Doctor Doom, Dormammu, Hulk, Iron Man (Extremis version), Spider-Man, Super-Skrull, Thor, Wolverine, and X-23 (Wolverine’s female clone), while Capcom’s roster includes Amaterasu, Chris Redfield, Chun-Li, Dante, Felicia, Morrigan, Ryu, Trish, Tron Bonne, Viewtiful Joe, and Wesker. There are still a lot of characters left to announce, especially considering MvC2 had the staggering number of 56 playable characters, so I decided to try and imagine what characters would take part in my dream roster.

Keep in mind that the following suggestions are more wishful thinking than actual possibilities, especially some relatively obscure picks – but, then again, some less well-known characters, such as X-23 and Dormammu, are already confirmed to appear. I’m also avoiding obvious choices, such as Mega Man, that have a high probability of actually appearing in the game. Also, I’m a bit of a comic book geek, so you’re bound to get more Marvel characters than Capcom’s in this list. Sorry about that.

Alright, let’s get this show on the road. Here are my preferred picks for new challengers on Marvel vs. Capcom 3!

Black Widow

Considering the rise in popularity of the character after this Summer’s Iron Man 2 movie, where she was portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, and her obvious appealing characteristics, I wouldn’t be surprised if Natasha Romanova appeared in the new game.
As anyone who’s read a comic starring her or watched the movie knows, Natasha, codenamed “Black Widow”, is a skillful super-spy working with S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers, although, depending on the media, she may or may not be a Soviet defector and byproduct of secret experimentation.
Gameplay-wise, she’d be a good pick for an agile fighter, similar to the movie version. Maybe a style akin to Street Fighter’s Cammy, who predominantly uses light, quick attacks in combos, but more unpredictable.
Also, make her look like Scarlett Johansson. Please?

Jill Valentine (Battle Suit)

(Caution: Resident Evil 5 spoilers below.)
If there’s anyone who could be a good Capcom rival to Black Widow, it’s Resident Evil 5‘s iteration of Jill Valentine, one of the most popular female characters in videogames.
Here’s the tricky part – Jill already appeared in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, based on her appearance in the first Resident Evil; she was an agile character with various projectile moves, able to summon zombies, undead dogs (Cerberus) and even a Tyrant to fight alongside her. In the newest Resident Evil, however, Jill underwent a drastic transformation, being turned by Albert Wesker into a superpowered, mindlessly obedient slave through the use of a brainwashing performance enhancer called ‘P30’. Oh, and it also made her blonde, probably because the developers thought unitard-wearing blonde bimbos have more sex appeal… but that’s beside the point.
I feel it would be much more interesting if they completely revamped Jill in MvC3, drawing inspiration from her newest appearance, specifically her boss battle. A crouched, almost feral combatant, dual-wielding Skorpion vz. 61 submachine guns against the enemy – how cool would that be? She could also use a SIG 556 rifle in her Hyper combo, or use the moves she displays in RE5′s cutscenes – skate-ride the other player! I can even imagine her intro animation: Jill appearing, wearing the robe and “bird mask” she uses at the beginning of RE5, and then discarding them for battle.
Still, I guess a lot of people would enjoy having the old Jill in the game as well. My idea is that they could have the old moveset available as “Jill (BSAA)“. In MvC2, there were two different Wolverines, one with bone claws and another with adamantium, so Jill appearing in two different shapes wouldn’t be exactly new, and both would have distinct abilities.

Pepper Pots (Rescue Suit)

Okay, so this is my wishful thinking reaching its limits of obscurity and unlikelihood. Virginia “Pepper” Pots has appeared in both Iron Man movies, so, if you’ve watched them, you know the character – what you might not know is that, in recent years, Matt Fraction, award-winning writer for the Invincible Iron Man comic series, turned Tony Stark’s secretary into a new heroine.
Outfitted with an arc reactor (like the one Iron Man wears in the movies) and calling herself “Rescue”, Pepper Pots  became a superheroine of her own right after Tony granted her a specialized variation of the Iron Man suit. Pepper’s a pacifist, so her Rescue suit has no offensive weaponry, but she still has the proprietary Stark repulsor technology, and she’s shown in the comics that she can kick some ass.
While not exactly obscure, Rescue is a recent creation, and so far she’s only appeared in one series and starred in an one-shot, so the likelihood of her appearing is very slim. Still, it’d be cool to have an agile, defensive “Iron Woman” character in the cast, don’t you think?

Frank West

He’s covered wars, you know.
What can I say? Frank West appeared in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, so he’s almost definitely appearing in this one, with the same moveset and wonderful personality.
Yeah, okay, he is an obvious addition, and I said I wouldn’t choose those, but… I just really want Frank West!

Winter Soldier

If there’s something that disappointed me from the initial surges of information on MvC3, it was Captain America. While Steve Rogers is the Captain America, I’d have preferred to have James “Bucky” Barnes as Cap in the game, even if the change was just in appearance. I simply prefer Bucky in the role, and since he’s the current Captain America, it’d be more faithful to the comics – but then again, the upcoming movie is about Steve Rogers, and by then we’ll all want our playable Cap to be Steve, probably. It’s a matter of personal choice, really, and Bucky can still appear as his other persona: the Winter Soldier.
In the comics, Bucky was Captain America’s teenage sidekick during World War II, until he was killed by a trap set by Cap’s enemy Baron Zemo… or so it seemed. In one of the most famous comic retcons of the past decade, author Ed Brubaker revealed Bucky survived the blast (minus an arm) and was captured by the Soviets, who brainwashed him to be their secret Cold War assassin, codenamed “Winter Soldier”. Eventually, Captain America found out the truth about Bucky’s “death”, and used a mystical artifact known as the Cosmic Cube to deprogram Bucky’s mind. Yes, it’s a convoluted backstory, but it made for quite the interesting character, since Bucky, a patriotic American soldier, had been turned into a Soviet agent, something that still has repercussions on today’s stories.
The Winter Soldier would be an interesting addition to the game; he can’t really be labelled a “hero” or “villain”, and he’d be a cool counterpart to Captain America. He’s not a soldier, he’s a hitman; he relies on stealth and secrecy, but he can fight, too. Martial arts moves and projectiles should compose the majority of his moveset.
I also wouldn’t mind Bucky appearing as a second, more offense-oriented Captain America in the game, but I guess that’s asking too much.

There are two Street Fighter characters I want on Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Cammy and Juri. Still, if I had to choose between one or the other, I’d have to go with Juri.
She’s one of the newest Street Fighter characters, first appearing in Super Street Fighter IV; she’s a good fighter, with a very offensive style; and she’s completely wicked, starting off in the story as a supposed henchwoman and then revealing herself a true power-hungry villainess. Considering only one Capcom villain has been announced so far, whereas Marvel’s side already has a few to count, she’d balance the cast perfectly. She can even replace M. Bison, if you ask me, as long as the game lets me humiliate Doctor Doom with her!

Well, that’s it for the first version of my MvC3 wish list. I didn’t mention everyone – I was going to include Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., but I couldn’t find any decent full-body picture, so I kept him off -, but that’s pretty much it. Take into account I don’t really expect all of them to appear – Rescue is a pretty farfetched choice, and I doubt Jill will be as I’d like her to -, but these are the choices I think would contribute to the game.
What do you think? Do you have further suggestions? Sound off in the comments below!

I’d like to see Cable (Marvel) using his Jesus complex to force his opponants to not fight him and just accept they’ve lost. 😀

  1. Jill is coming as DLC content, so that much I got right.

  1. No trackbacks yet.
